Don’t kid yourself, SIZE MATTERS, but we’re not talking about sex here

  • Follow Me on Pinterest

Ha, what did you think I was talking about when I said size matters? Wow, you have dirty minds! We’re talking about blogging here, not sex.

image

I’ve heard a laundry list of recommendations regarding the length and girth of a good blog post. Most suggest keeping it under 500 under words while some guides say 300 words is a good marker. 700 has also popped up as the line in the sand that you should never exceed.

The first question I had is what do these people have against even hundred numbers? Are 400, 600, or 800 so much more inferior? Yeah, that really popped into my head. Back to the land of the normal, I did come to a painful conclusion. Shorter likely is Better for maximum pleasure.

By The Numbers

There was no official survey done with previous posts published here, but I’m willing to bet that not a single one of them was less than 500 words. Even worse, there’s a very high probability that say 30% of them breached the 700 word point of no return. Fooey.

I set out with a mission here to make this my shortest blog post but it’s already 200 words for crying out loud. If you have the wordsmithing skills to deliver something tangible and impactful in 300 words, you are freakin awesome. I can’t do it. I’m a story teller. I like to paint a picture and then deliver the message. I think it’s working, but this blog will be taking more of a simplicity is genius approach. Here are a few suggestions why your blog should be a lean, mean, sexing, err I mean writing… machine.

People Scan, They Don’t Read

As much as I’d love to think you all read every word I write, I stopped lying to myself. People read the beginning, the bullets, and the end. Give them something to scan and do your best to draw them in

Avoid Looooong Paragraphs

The only thing worse than a 1500 word post is a 1500 word post broken up into 3 paragraphs. How dreadful would that be? It’s a touch tricky when you like hearing yourself talk and think you have to keep those 7 sentences together to prove your point, but do your readers a favor and break it up.

The Net is caffeine fueled and ADD Riddled

I have ADHD, so I’m allowed to make fun of it, right? Look there’s a flower. People are busier than ever, whether it’s by choice or by necessity. Fact of the matter is that takes half the time to read 500 words than it does 1000… and that’s if they actually read it. They want to finish what they start so they can move on to something else, like the butterfly that just fluttered by.

Screw it, hard-wired rules are for the birds. This post was supposed to be under 500 words but I want to do a conclusion. Hope you’ll be able to survive an extra 30 words! And don’t worry, I’ll still be able to live with myself despite the fact I’ve never written a post under 500 words. Are we in agreement that shorter is better? What length structure do you approach in your writing? Thanks for stopping by!

Great article. Mos def will keep that in mind when I blog and create content. ,-) have a Happy Friday, Bra-Brahh! ,-)

Right on, Victor! It's great to hear that you're going to incorporate it into your material. My Friday rocked, bro... Here's to a Super Saturday!

I've actually done way more research on this than I'd like to admit.  All things being equal, a longer post (1500-3000) packs more punch.  There are pros and cons to both short and long.  I don't think there is any "right" way.  It depends on the topic, audience, and writing style.  Try a 1500+ post in the future, and let us know what you discover.  Mix it up.

I would say most of my entries range from 700-1000 words, so I'm on the long winded side according to many. Good idea, though, Steve... Maybe I will try a Marathon post! Thanks for stopping by and adding s some great points.

Hi Tony, I read your entire post, every word.  Great post! ツAnnTran_

Wonderful, Ann, I'm so glad that you enjoyed it! Thanks for the kind words and sharing on Twitter. Hope all is well for you.

Tony, I'm not a great believer of *short* posts (I'm talking about tweet-sized to 200 words), O.K. unless you're Mr. Seth Godin! 500-700 words length is optimal as you mentioned, but most of my posts were well passed that mark (on average around 1000+ words!) and still received well by people. Reasons: Content, writing style (flow), pics (for tiring eyes), formatting. No harm done. Nice tips, btw.

Yes, Seth Godin can more or less do whatever he wants!. Great seeing you here, I enjoyed your input and agree with most everything you said. Thanks!

As long as a blog can clearly state what you want to say, it really doesn't matter how many words you put in. Certainly you don't want to write a novel for your readers.

I would agree, well said

Very hard for me to keep things on the shorter side.

It's difficult for me, as well, to "limit" my writing to a wordcount. But at the end of the day, I think people are more likely to fully read a shorter post.

It depends on the blog. This post was the right length :D... no seriously it was fine! It didn't need to be shorter, you could have written more if you'd wanted and I'd have stuck with it. Succinct, is of course better, if a blogger waffles and spend 200 words getting to any kind of point... I'll skim on to the next job!

Thanks Emma! You bring up an interesting point, as well, about getting to the point quickly. That's very important.

 Thank you for your work!

My pleasure, thanks for stopping by.

I am rather suspicious of any formula. It so depends on how much I have to say and how well I'm saying it. Posts can also change tack half way through to introduce another element into the discussion.. this brings in fresh ideas and makes the post more interesting than the One Idea One Post formula. It's good to remember people are not stupid, they can follow complex posts. Beware all formulas!

Some fair points there. Thanks for adding your perspective to the discussion

Write as much as necessary, but shorter is preferred.  I keep mine around 300 words.

ThanKs Charlie... I'll have to check out your blog. I need to see how the 300 is done!

The post I've earned the most money from is over 1,000 words, so I disagree about shorter being better. I think you should write as much as you need to in order to make your point or answer the reader's question, then stop.

This post is the perfect length for me. I really, really dislike short blog posts. They are like unfinished sentences. When I go to a blog and the post is basically four sentences long, I wonder why I bothered to visit the page and I usually don't return. There's usually just one idea, not fleshed out or given any substance. You get better literature from fortune cookies.

Haha, your last line had me cracking up! I'm with you, when "posts" are four sentences I almost want to tell them to make a FB post instead :-) Thanks Liz!

Generally, I keep my post short, namely 300 words. No one going to read a long post anymore. However, I do agree that size matters in general with regard to social networking.

I actually did read your whole article. I am a big fan of getting big points across in small posts. :) It took me a long time to rein in my inner storyteller though, and the real turning point is in the editing after originally composing

Congrats on developing as a writer! You're so right about the editing afterward, that's when you can really shed the inner sorrymn story tell teller. Thanks for adding to the conversation!

I think we are overwhelmed with info so i understand that keeping it simple and short it much better. So what if we have a long story. Is it then preferable to tell 2 - 3 lines and youtube the rest? Thanks for sharing!

I think shorter is better. A year or so ago I wrote a long one which I felt was really good but it didn't get much traction.

It's tough to say, John. I lean that way, too. But some of the comments (like Steve's) suggest there are benefits for longer posts. I think if you're going long, you gotta hit it osf Outta the park.

Yes sir. Definitely agree with that. I've done one long post and feel it was pretty decent.  http://sportsmusicfood.com/post/1353130856/devastating-hits
