Funny Story, I used to blog before Instagram came out on Android

  • Follow Me on Pinterest

Give me a few seconds to dust off my keyboard.  My last post was over 60 days ago… back in May… can this possibly be true?  Yeah, time stamps don’t lie(usually).  You MIGHT have thought I gave up on blogging, but no. Let’s face it, this isn’t a top 10 social media blog or anything.  It’s not like you’re depending on this site to get your social media fix.  At least I hope not, because you’d be a desperate junky at this point, it’s been 60 days for crying out loud.

The fact of the matter is that I’ve been busy catering to my most engaging audience.  It’s almost as if the people I’ve met on Instagram REALLY do depend on me for their daily dose of skycandy, vintage landscapes, and pretty butterflies.  I only have so much time to devote to social media and I’m no fool, I am drawn to the network where I’m most in demand.  Conversely, it’s been SO rewarding to see something that you created be applauded and praised by hundreds, sometimes thousands, of people daily.  Look at the real-life reactions that I’m getting and tell me this isn’t what I was born to do.

As for the future of this blog, it’s still up in the air.  Maybe we switch gears to a photo blog, not entirely sure.  The purpose of this post is two-fold – 1.) To thank those who have fueled my passion over the last 3-4 months and 2.) Give a sample of my work so others not on Instagram can see it… After all, I do have a website, I might as well use it for something, right?

A brief history lesson… I come from a line of immensely talented artists, on my Mom’s side, pre-dating the 1900′s in Italy. From my Great Grandpa, whom I never met, and my late Grandpa Gino whom I adored, to my Aunt Marie – I’ve always been surrounded by sculptures and oil paintings.  Truth is, I always thought this beautiful gift had skipped a generation.  Oh, but it didn’t skip over me after all. It just laid dormant for my whole life up until Instagram drug it out of me!  It’s furthering the notion that this is meant to be.

Now, it’s one thing to snap a great picture.  Many people are competent with that skill.  However, during this short journey, I’ve been able to exercise my vivid imagination through editing photos.  These two before and after snapshots demonstrate how the mind really is a canvas.

That’s why this isn’t just photography for me, and many others, it’s art.  It’s a way to express oneself and connect with others. As one of my friends said “Images go beyond art, it’s a way of communication that knows no language barrier.”  This is so true, and I’ve embraced my interpretive style.  Take a look at these sunsets – some are edited with my trademarked “Van Gogh effect,” while others are just naturally beautiful.  Either way, these are generally my biggest hits.

Here are some other samples of cityscapes, landscapes, and wildlife shots as well.

Well, there you have it, almost.  I’ve been working in financial services for the better part of the last decade.  My sales skills will always be with me but, quite frankly, my talents are being wasted in this current line of work.  30 is a little young to go through a mid-life crisis, I definitely intend to live past 100, so I’m only a 1/3rd of a way through this gig.  Maybe I’m just a lil crazy – but all the great ones are, right?  What do you think, am I delusional or is this something I should pursue?

Thanks for visiting!

Hey Tony, Your photos are gorgeous and I discovered them through Instagram (and a Like you had on one of my images!). I'm part of a start up called PosterFuse (www.posterfuse.com) that transforms your Instagram and Facebook memories into a 20" x 32" photos and these would look perfect for a thematic wall!  If you're interested in learning more, feel free to email me and we'd love to send you a sample. Stephanie stephanie@posterfuse.com

I think you are on to something. Love your photos but I wonder what you could do with a camera other than your phone? I would like to see those photos. Cheers!

love this, Tony! just drafted a blog post re: instagram and i'll backlink to this. releasing tomorrow.

You're not delusional at all, your pics are awesome and you should definitely continue! But it may be wise to do the shift from your current job gradually... because these things take time to adjust to. Might be a bit of system shock to jump in head first, that's all. :)

You have an amazing eye and talent for photography. But, I agree with the other posters -- you need to find ways to stay in all your channels. Follow your passion and find a way to share it in a variety of ways.

I loved this post... Almost as much as I loved finding out it was YOU who wrote it Tony! You were one of the first people I connected with when Instagram went to Android... I don't get on the site as much as I'd like (although I've been trying lately) I can clearly recall seeing your photos improve over time, you've truly come into yourself!

Thanks for noticing Meredith! Lol @ finding out it was me who wrote it, that's funny. Thanks for sticking with me and taking the time to comment :) Enjoy the rest of your week!

Tony, I found your blog via instagram. I've been blogging for a couple of years but just started with IG. I was already slowing down the blogging a but, but IG has really put it in crawl mode. There is so much more response on IG! Guess we all like that instant gratification . Love your photos and edits, no matter where you post them, though! Just started following you IG feed.

Awesome!! I'll look for you on IG, too. You're spot-on with your point about instant gratification and how engaging IG followers are. Can't lie, I'm a sucker for attention. Thanks!

Good to meet you, Tony. Are you right that you have artistic talent as a photographer? Yes, absolutely! I much enjoyed seeing these photographs, particularly the 'before and after' ones so I can follow how your mind works in the editing.  Personally, what I would love is a blog which had these before and after photographs as illustration with 500-1000 words about the circumstances in which you took the photograph (happened to see the view out of car window/special excursion etc), what went through your mind as you edited, and a description of how you did the editing. As you already know you can write (not everyone can!) I think you are uniquely placed to offer this (I promise to be one of your followers if you do).

Hi Laura, great to meet you as well! That's a wonderful suggestion and along the lines of the direction I was thinking for this site. Lastly, thanks so much for the kind and encouraging words, it's greatly appreciated!

Hello Tony, to answer your question, simple and straight forward..NO ! you are not delusional in having a dream, or a desire. You have excellent examples from you very own family but the question when you pursue the dream can you or would you be willing to pay the price.  The choice is yours. Sorry if I sound too blunt. Have a Great time and enjoy, cheers :)

The quickest way from point A to point B is a straight line, I can deal with blunt :) what makes this difficult is that yes, I'm willing to pay the price but my family and 3 kids can't be put in the crosshairs of that decision. I'll find my way, though, don't you worry. Thanks for the great questions and commentary.

Good luck Tony!! You have a definite talent that I hope brings you success and happiness! I have only in recent months realised that I love photography as much as I do!! I have liked taking photos and the sense of achievement you get after taking a great shot. I work in public services but my passion is photography. I am hoping to pursue my passion as a side line and you never know what's might happen! All the best, Tony C ( Good name by the way...strong name!) ;o)

Right on, Tony, it's a great feeling, isn't it? Thanks for stopping by and adding to the discussion

Right on, thanks Barry!

I think you're on to something. Don't let go!

Love your photos. Very nice, just keep going

I will, thank you Ernie (and for the FB shares as well)!

Not bad Tony. This is the first time I've saw your IG pics. I'm a little skeptical though.... where are you seeing parrots and shit? lol Just joking,  Are you devoting lots of time to driving around and taking pictures now? You've cut me off from what you're doing! I say, if you want to be a photographer, get a Tumblr and Pinterest and find a way to get your pics on everything (IFTTT maybe?) You should really look in to developing legit skills - learn lighting, perspective, about lenses and so on - to go with your natural talent. Photography is definitely a real possibility, you can easily make that a full time job. You just got to ask yourself if it's a fad (do you like the attention, or do you like the actual thing you're doing?). You'll make the right decision.

Wow, I didn't think you were actually going to read it!! The parrot was at the aviary, so you got me there lol... but the other birds were in the wild! Now you're therd or 4th person in the last week that has mentioned IFTTT. I have no clue what it is, care to fill me in? Obviously I'm missing the boat on that! Thanks for taking the time to read this and offer guidance. Your advice is highly valued and much appreciated, Adam. And as a footnote, I definitely didn't cut you (or anyone else) out. Just haven't been as visible in the normal channels. Don't worry, I still know who my peeps are ;)

Agree - you'll always be able to make a living in the business world - use your life to follow your passion!

Great points, thanks for adding

Wow these are amazing, keep going!!!!

Thanks so much Stephanie! I'll keep on keepin' on :)

Follow your passion, you sound like you have what it takes!

Thank you for your encouragement

Follow you passion as Paula has said and I love your photos...BUT be everywhere!

Ha, you're right Michael. Once I hit my 10,000 followers on IG, I'll get back to devoting time to rebuilding my presence at my old stomping grounds! Thanks, as always, for your support Michael.

I honestly think you're on to something here. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, as they say. Apparently, many people tend to agree with and admire your sense of what is beautiful. I think you should cultivate it and see how far it goes. I think you should keep blogging though -- still a lot of people not on Instagram (including myself) and that's an untapped audience for you who will most likely be just as appreciative of your work. Keep it up, remain true to your vision.

Well said, Emmanuel. Thank you for the advice and taking the time to share your thoughts.

Tony - you are talented! Follow your passion....

Why thank you, Paula, very kind of you to say. I appreciate your guidance.

Since you feel such passion about it ...........go for it.

I'm on that track - thanks :)

Great story and pics

These are great pictures.  Now to be able to convert to $ :)

That's the name of the game :) Still working on that part! Thanks Steve

Tony, it seems you have a good eye. I need to pay closer attention to your Instagram feed. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the kind words, much appreciated

life is art, and art is life

photo and video blogs are a lot easier to produce than typed ones. Just like any blog the content has to rule.

True that - content rules :) Did you read the book? Thanks for stopping by Don
