Stay Thirsty Friends – Be the Most Influential Man in the World

  • Follow Me on Pinterest

No one in Social Media cares if you are the most interesting man in the world like the Dos Equis Guy… We want to see the most influential man(or woman) in the world! A few names come to mind for that title; but it’s not like Ann Handley, Scott Stratten, & Gary Vaynerchuk need any more accolades. This term influence has become quite the buzzword lately. Who do you influence? How many people do you influence? What is influence? If you’re anything like me, you’ve become nauseous due to influenza from the influence epidemic. Did we break a record for saying influence 7 times in the opening paragraph? Let’s call Klout, since they’re the “standard” of influence( that’s #8!). But before we do that, here are a few ways that you can immediately increase your authority in Social Media

INFLUENCE FOR $200, ALEX.

Alex Trebek “That is correct”

It’s like a game show sometimes, isn’t it? As much as we hate to be poked & prodded, or don’t want big brother watching our every move online, it’s what the people want to know. Like it or not, the measurement apps aren’t going away and you’re always being rated by someone, somewhere. There’s never going to be a perfect assessment of one’s influence, they all have flaws. They often measure your superficial influence, not real influence. You’re not more influential because the cute puppy picture you posted gets shared 30 times or 10 people retweet your retweet of a Mashable story. Real Influence goes beyond an action… beyond the shares and retweets. Influence is the power to persuade, the ability to change people’s thoughts, and sway their pre-conceived beliefs. It’s tricky to measure, but you’ll know the feeling when you’re doing it right.

PERCEPTION IS REALITY

It’s not necessarily how successful you are, it’s how successful others think you are…and I’m not talking about your mom. When you convey a sense of importance, you instantly become more significant. Successful people don’t ask other people to like their fanpage or retweet their blog post. In other words, there’s a fine line between self-promotion and being labeled as a spammer. When you utilize tools like Empire Avenue and Triberr where people promote your content, it makes you appear in-demand. It’s far more effective when others are doing the promotion for you. Also, winners in social media do not clutter their feeds with negative commentary. Remember, winners find ways –losers find excuses. If you’re not getting the desired results, change your tactics.

NETWORK: QUALITY > QUANTITY

While it’s possible to have a marriage of both quality and quality, only a small percentage of influencers will achieve this. Not to say that can’t be you, but I highly recommend building your network through known commodities rather than going for the quick score. There are services that will get you a bunch of twitter followers. You can send friend requests to everyone with a pulse and maxout your 5000 connections in a jiffy. That’s all fine and dandy, but what good are thousands of people who ignore you? Or, what if you don’t relate to what their most talked about topics are? Bottom line, when expanding your network, it’s ok to be picky about who you chum with. It will pay dividends to bring value to those who are more influential than you are. Start supporting them, and you might be surprised how many will start supporting you.

PARTING SHOTS

Before I ask for your thoughts, I didn’t an interesting Twitter experiment that plays into this topic. For the first time, I was approaching a symmetrical number between those I was following and those who followed me right around 1867 last week. Although a bit shallow, one of my own “metrics” when I observed other people was that same follower to following ratio. It’s just human nature, it gives the perception of importance when someone has more followers than they tweeps they follow. So I decided to trim the fat and unfollowed 40 or 50 not-so-active accounts that weren’t following me. In the last few days, I’ve gained 125+ additional followers without doing anything else different. Might be worth considering if you’re in a similar spot with less than 10,000 followers.

Here’s what I’m interested in hearing about – What’s your definition of Influence? Who Influences you most and why do you think that is?

I think he is correct must always stay thirsty for new business!

Influence is control, enslavement, the  shepherd for those who cannot lead. It's not who, rather what, as my desire influences me most.

Interesting article thanks, personally the most influential man in the world is the one who cares the most :)

I am influenced most by those who provide real, relatable and helpful content and information on a regular basis. People who are in it to give something back to the community around them and not just to spam their networks with self-promotion.

Hi Lisa, good to see you here. It sounds like we share a very similar framework for who we consider influential. I appreciate you stopping by and adding to the conversation.

My def? Their words or actions cause me to speak or behave in a certain way. Be it good or bad. Who influences me? Padre Pio. Why? Because he was a very Holy man

I think I ought to google Padre Pio. Sounds like he made an impact on you but I'm not familiar with him. I can see how being infallible lends to a higher level of influence. Thanks, as always, Sharon.

Is it too much of a shot across the bough to state that I was paid to leave this comment? Of course I have as little use for platitudes as anyone and wouldn't waste your time just saying that.  Being self-important is akin to celebrity, which is what early algorithms tracked with their follow/follower ratios etc. but that's SO 2011! Everyone tracks activity and who is interacting with you now, not how many followers you have. There are several people with fewer than 10,000 followers with Klout scores way into the 70's. It's all about who you talk to now.

RJZ -How many dollars were you paid to comment here :) but your arrow struck me through the heart If this were not the topic, you probably wouldn't have brought it up. Now the perception will be that I "buy"my influence. I'm no better than a politicianI guess. Klout is fascinating in some ways. I'm not well into the 0's just under actually at 69. I have appx 2000 Twitter followers and 800 fb friends... Yet a true reach of 11000. I'm like come on but maybe that factors in who shares my content. And a tidbit you'll find interesting... I was actually going to message you so ironic that you commented. Did a google search for What is influence (not logged into G+) and your #eav post from last year was like the 4th result. Kinda cool.

A good read, I will recommend this to a few of my friends!

Super to hear, thanks for visiting

Haha, Yessir, love those commercials!

EA is the same way.   Run a mission, pay someone to leave a comment and your EA shares increase in value.  Does the increase in share value mean people liked your blog, Facebook page, etc?  I doubt it.

Tom, perhaps you're right, probably doesn't have a direct correlation; but I think it highlights the whole point of perception. Having 20 comments on a post makes it look more relevant than if it had 2. Thanks for dropping by.

Being the most interesting person is, well, interesting.  Being influential, however, is POWERFUL!

Because " PERCEPTION IS REALITY", we all could play 'games' or gaming social scores. The measurement is what you believe you are. To that extend, I'm not paying lip service for any of the measurement.

I hear you, some people don't believe in them at all. It can be easily manipulated. Thanks

great content!

Thank you, glad you liked it.

It is worth thinking about what kind of influence you want. If you have a real message then is it getting out to people who need to hear it? If you are selling marketing or promoting, are you influencing buyers or your peers. It takes careful thoughts about each measure to determine if the audience you have is really helpful, or only partly so, and how best to leverage your opportunities.

Speaking of great photographers, for those of you reading, David is another must follow on instagram and his site is surely worth a visit. You touched on something that I really didn't discuss in my post.... The audience. They're the ones who determine how influential you really are. Thanks for taking part in the discussion.

I like the  "Remember, winners find ways –losers find excuses". that's lesson in itself. :-)

As long as you found something to take away, it was worth the trip, right? Thanks for visiting.

To you point about the twitter follow for follow, when I cut the fat on my twitter follow, at first my following dropped dramatically. However, before too long, it began to go in the other direction. Every day, I gain approx 10 new followers, as the perception is one of influence. However, to the point on perception, influence is more than perception. Make no mistake about it, I've learned people really do 'follow', and their ears are ever open to what you say or do. For all the talk on social media about the measurement of influence via crude influence measurements by klout and kred, I believe the discussion is actually one of thought leadership.

Great to see one of my new instagram friends commenting here. For those of you reading this, MAKE SURE you find Catherine on Instagram and visit her website if you enjoy seeing ridiculously awesome photos. Back to your points, the twitter thing is interferingm interesting. I'm starting to think Twitter may be suggesting people that fit that mold more often. Also, you're right, influence is more than just perception, but I believe it does play a part. Great comment, thanks for stopping by Catherine.

I just do my thing and be me. I don't want to influence anyone, and as far as people influencing me it's a question of degrees. Some people are funny so I share their stuff, it doesn't mean I care about their politics or I'm going to give them any more attention on other matters.

Ok, that's cool. You're kinda independent of how others roll, and I respect that. So you don't have any staples that you go to or frequent, though?

Klout told me that it feels I have influence in Pinterest. Interesting because I do not even use it.

Klout is funny like that, and a large part of the reason I don't tie my self(social) worth to it like I did last year. You probably tweeted about it or were making fun of it and poof - you're "influential" in it because some replied to you. But we both know that's not influence. Thanks for your example.

Perception is NOT reality!   REALITY is ABSOLUTE TRUTH, perception is our limited understanding as a mirror of THE REALITY. Influence is illusive.  Donald Trump is influential, but he buys it; am I influenced by him?  Not much. Members of Congress are influencial, but they are bought and paid to CAUSE your life to be impacted by those who bought their ability to "influence," which is a form of FORCE, not power. If I tell my young children, to do something, whether or not they want to do it, this is a form of parental "influence." My / our behavior, can inspire others to behave in a way that improves their life; this is the only real influence that we can control and doubtful it can be measured, this is a TRUE form of POWER.

Unfortunately perception IS reality. You can perceive I'm a (bad word) because I debate you in the comments, but in reality I'm a very funny person (at least in my own mind). Your perception, however, is I'm a (bad word) so it becomes your reality. But my friends and family would wholeheartedly disagree with you. I do agree with you that people are influential only if people do something when they act. Donald Trump isn't influential to you, but he is to some. One of the things we always tell clients is to focus less on the perceived influencers and more on the people who have communities of people who do things when they act. Those people may have only 100 blog readers or Twitter followers or Facebook fans, but if 90 of them buy when they mention your product, they're pretty darn influential.

Very happy to see we agree. though appears as different, perceived in the same language.

You bring up some interesting counterpoints. I almost thought we disagreed after reading the first three paragraphs, but then I made it to your final summation. We do agree, afterall, that the truest form of influence nearly impossible to measure. I mentioned the power to persuade and generate a change is what REAL influence is. I will, however, maintain that perception is a reality. I mean Gini Dietrich replied to your comment on my blog... We're totally going to be viewed as more important than we really are (even though I pay her a Grand per comment.. Shh don't tell her, it's a secret). Either way, I appreciate you taking the time to voice your thoughts - that's what this is all about.

You have influenced me after all, now if you want to turn my perception into a reality /  I'll do it for $500 per comment...  all the best cp

The bit about perception being reality is SO true.

You know I agree, but it appears that there's quite a dissention regarding that statement

Agree  with him quality over time is better than quantity and a lot of extra work for quantity

It's not always extra work, depending on the channel you go through, but quality trumps quantity in the long run

The level of influence that one tempts to obtain is subjective. What is the purpose of being influential?  Is it a popularity contest or a means to an end?

Sure it's subjective. And those are good questions Mr Kornicki, ones I'm hoping to get insights on! Thanks for adding your perspective
