May I Have Your Attention Please? Will the Real Blog Readers Please Stand Up?

May I have your attention please?

May I have your attention please?

Will the real blog readers please stand up?

I repeat, will the real blog readers please stand up?

Seth Godin don’t gotta comment on his posts to sell his blog; well I do, so…. oops, I almost dropped the F Bomb.  Sometimes I forget that I’m not Slim Shady, or even slim for that matter, but I love the raw power and passion that Eminem puts into his music. My goal is to bring that same level enthusiasm in every post I publish, although it’s doubtful that I’ll be controversial enough to be the Marshall Mathers of the blogging world (never say never).  In the meantime, here’s what I do know – I can’t do it alone.  So, will my real blog readers please stand up? And put one of those comments on each post up? And be proud to be outta your mind and outta control and one more time, loud as you can, how does it go (Forgot Again, sorry)

The Queen is King of Social Media – So Where’s Her Spot on the Throne?

Content is King – have you heard the news? Of course you have! It’s been trumpeted loudly for the past 6 months, usually by men. We go beating our chest and tweet out infographics, statistics, and articles – Mmm content, yummy. Content is King we say – but is it?  Our battle cry might just be a coping mechanism to compensate for what men are lacking, kind of like the guy with really a BIG truck. If Content is King, then an engaging community is Queen.. and we know who REALLY runs the kingdom, don’t we?  Oh yes, that’s right, the Queen IS King of Social Media, both figuratively and literally.

What do Beer, Hockey, and Social Media Have in common?

Was the title too much of a giveaway? I like to have a little mystery in my titles rather than put lay out all the cards on the table but some stereotypes just can’t be dodged. If you were playing a word association game and someone said Canada, the first two words out of your mouth would be Beer and Hockey. Ok ok, you’re right, maybe a few would say Maple Syrup, too. If you’re not Canadian, you might wonder why I’m starting out the post this way…. “Uhhh, won’t they be mad at you?” Nope, don’t worry, they’re probably laughing with me and nodding their heads in agreement.  I’ve spent the last couple weeks reaching out to some of my friends from the North and one thing I’ve noticed is that they have thick skin. I’m sure they need it around this time of year!! But before we get into the Social Media aspect and how I believe Canadians excel at it, I’d like to share a quote from Jackie Bigford (who you’ll hear more from later) about what goes into being Canadian. Her description is much more eloquent than anything I could dream up. In fact, I should probably just give her a co-authoring credit!

Comments are Like Crack – What’s Your #SocialMedia Drug of Choice?

Sniff it, snort it, smoke it, type it, or read it… we gotta get our fix.  Some like to fly high with the cute blue bird, others are shooting-up with pins instead of needles, and most are already junkies of the soon-to-be public drug called Facebook. We all have our favorite platforms and it’s more than likely that you’re active on multiple social networks every single day.  Fortunately, an overdose of Social Media hasn’t killed anyone yet (at least not directly).  And boy, it doesn’t take long for most to get addicted… once you receive that first RT, comment, or like, you’re hooked! There are a number of different reasons why we’re all here at the party together and the way I see it, the party isn’t going to stop because we’ve grown so attached to our networks that we can’t pull ourselves away. There’s no denying it anymore, Social Media is like a drug.

It’s the Little Thoughts That Kill

I’m writing this post against the better judgment of my wife.  We (men) usually know what the outcome is when that happens, so here’s to hoping that the powerful lesson you are reminded of outweighs the wrath of a wife’s “do what you want” ultimatum. There aren’t going to be any fancy bullet points or funny jokes in this installment, hope you’re not too disappointed.  This is an extremely personal story and you may even wonder why I’m sharing it.  Or, you might be compelled to feel sorry for me, but please don’t, I am at peace with what happened and don’t hold a grudge against myself.  The reason you’re seeing this is because we need to refocus on what’s inside, not what’s going  on around us. The only thing I ask is that you make a genuine resolve to be more aware your thoughts and the understand the effects they have on your outcome.

No one wants to read your mindless poppycock –it’s time to {grow} up

journalist.jpg

Anyone can blog, it’s a fact.  Not everyone should blog, it’s an opinion that some would argue is a fact.  I’ve been doing some in-depth research (like surfing the internet and talking to smart people) and have come to the conclusion that nobody wants to read a humdrum dissertation on a topic that you’re not an expert in.  But let’s face it, many blogs are based on opinionated rants or summation of the author’s thoughts on a random subject.  Oh, oh, oh, and they’re dripping in keyword-rich SEO butter.

It’s one thing to blog, and another thing to build a blogging community.  P.S. the latter is what the smart people I’ve talked are busy doing.  I asked some friends “Hey – who do you know that has built an engaged blog community?” MARK SCHAEFER  “Which blogger makes think about what they post” MARK SCHAEFER “Who’s blog has good examples of fresh content?’ MARK SCHAEFER… I can’t make this stuff up!  I gotta check out this Mark guy… and that’s when I grew up.  I introduced myself to him by vowing to read all 274 posts from his blog last year. It was my own personal {grow} project.  He said I should be given a medal.  I think I did receive a medal – and I’m going to share three of the prized lessons from a year’s worth of the {grow} community.

The 4 Super Powers Every Leader Should Have

Before you dismiss this piece as science fiction nonsense, I challenge you to read further and dispute my notions.  Don’t worry, there won’t be any correlations between being a leader and having the ability to fly or shoot webs from your wrist.  We’re talking real world stuff here.  But don’t you have to be a hero to possess super powers?  What makes someone a hero in today’s world?

“We need a hero… Courageous, self-sacrificing people, setting examples for all of us…the one who taught them how to hold on a second longer…I believe there’s a hero in all of us…that keeps us honest, gives us strength, and makes us noble” – May Parker (Spiderman 2)

I, too, believe that there’s a hero in all of us; but not everyone chooses to let it out.  It’s the select few who put themselves out there, the few who aren’t afraid to fail, the few who captivate us that truly make a a difference.  We, the leaders, are the heroes who move the world forward.  Now that we agree you are a hero, or want to be one, it’s time to synergize these 4 essential super powers so we can raise our game to the next level.
